How to Create a Focal Point in Any Room

by Wiens Furniture & Appliances

Every room needs a focal point – it’s an essential design principle. When you enter a room, your eye needs somewhere to land, and a focal point does just that. But, if your space is a big empty box, how do you create one? Follow along for a few ideas.

1. Start with Architecture

Architectural details usually set the tone for a room and may already designate a focal point. Fireplaces, French doors, range hoods – are all great focal points. Count it a big help if you have any of these in your home already. You won’t have to work so hard to decorate!

A focal point like a fireplace often benefits from embellishing it a little. Flank it with two large bookcases, or try an oversized painting to go right above the mantel.

2. Add Colour

Rooms, especially smaller ones, can handle some bold colours. Try a sofa in bold fabric or an ottoman to bring some drama and interest to your space.

3. Height

If you don’t have architectural details in your home, create some with height. A large accent cabinet or bookcase is always a great idea. We also love pairing a console table with a mirror. A mirror adds some height but also reflects light in the space, making the room feel bigger.

4. Contrast

Using contrast in your home is an easy way to add a focal point to any room. Lighter furniture pieces look great against a dark wall colour. You can use the same method with dark furniture against light walls.

5. Play with Shapes

A fun shape on a furniture piece, like a headboard, can be a great way to add a focal point. It’s a way to add something unusual and surprising – you’ll be surprised how quickly it becomes the star of the room.
