How to Clean Your Washer and Dryer

    by Wiens Furniture & Appliances

When’s the last time you washed your washing machine? A total oxymoron but so important! Washer and dryer maintenance are crucial to the productivity and longevity of your machines.

How to Clean Your Washing Machine:

There are a few ways to clean your washing machine.

    1.    Use commercially made tablets. We sell them here at Wiens! Follow the instructions on the package.
    2.    Put some vinegar in the washing machine soap dispenser and run a full cleaning cycle. If your washing machine doesn’t have a cleaning cycle, run a full hot water cycle.

The Gasket: The gasket is an important part of a washing machine, so make sure it is in good working order. You don’t want it to leak!

How to Clean the Gasket: Wipe it down with hot soapy water. If mould has appeared, use a diluted bleach solution to get rid of it. Soak a towel or cloth in the diluted bleach solution and place on the spot where the mould has appeared. Wipe it down after the mould has disappeared. Check for bobby pins, coins and any other pocket treasures as well.

A few great tips: Always try to keep your machine door open, as well as the dispenser when not in use. This helps prevent mould buildup and keeps any potential smells at bay.
Once a year, pull the machine away from the wall and check for leaks or hoses that may need to be tightened. You may want to consider changing the hoses every 5-6 years.

    How to Clean Your Dryer:

The Lint Filter: Clean the lint filter on a regular basis. A lot of dryers will prompt you when the lint trap is full; a very handy feature. Fabric softener sheets make our clothes smell good but can build a waxy film in the lint filter. Wash the lint filter on a regular basis if you use fabric softener sheets.

Dryer Duct: Clean the dryer duct once a year. Check for trapped lint, a potential fire hazard. This will help your machine run more efficiently.

    Happy cleaning!
