How to Clean Leather Furniture

by Wiens Furniture & Appliances

Furniture made from natural hides can develop character, become softer, and get more beautiful over time. When you take good care of your leather furniture, it can last for decades. Here are a few leather cleaning tips to keep your furniture looking great for years to come.

Clean Regularly

Routine care is the easiest way to keep your furniture looking great over the years. Use a soft, clean cloth to wipe off all exposed surfaces; this removes dust and debris.

For any spots that seem dull, gently buff to a soft lustre. For small scratches and scuffed areas, gently rub with your fingertip.

For high-quality leather, moving the oils that occur naturally is all you need to do to remove scuff marks and scratches.

Deep Clean

Giving your leather furniture a deep clean is a great idea, every so often. Vacuum in the places you can’t see, like under the cushions and in the crevices.

If deeper cleaning is needed, it’s best to get the help of a leather cleaning professional.

Cleaning Spots

Leather is one of the best materials for handling spilled food and drinks. But, the best thing you can do is to wipe up the spill right away!

When you find a greasy spot, use a clean cloth to wipe off the excess oils and leave it alone. The hide will absorb the oil and spread it out over time. If you don’t want the spot to show until it disappears, throw a pillow or throw blanket on it to cover it.

Ideally, you shouldn’t put any cleaning products on your furniture other than a bit of water on a soft cloth.

Protect Against the Elements

Direct sunlight and heat can do a lot of damage to leather, drying it out and making it prone to cracking and flaking. Try to avoid placing your leather furniture too close to heating vents.

Leather’s natural lustre catches light beautifully, but try creating the same effect with overhead lighting or table lamps instead.
