10 Tips for Decorating with Accent Chairs

by Wiens Furniture & Appliances

Accent chairs are a great way to add colour and personality to your home. Our guide for decorating with accent chairs will help you find the perfect set (or just one) for your living space.

4 Common Accent Chair Types

1. Slipper Chairs

Slipper chairs are a low chair with no arms. They are an excellent choice for a room tight on space, for flanking a fireplace, or for tucking into a corner. They are a small, moveable, and stylish option for any room.

2. Club Chairs

Perfect as a pair or on its own, this roomy chair is perfect for conversation with friends or for curling up with a book in your bedroom.

3. Occasional Chairs

These chairs are light and chic and are easily moved from room to room. They are perfect for any living room, but are also great for your bedroom, office, or walk-in closet.

4. Wingchairs

These large chairs make a statement. They are a great accompaniment to a sofa or a great alternative to a love seat. Place a pair near a fireplace in your living room, or use them as the head chairs to your dining set.

How to Decorate with Accent Chairs

1. Go Bold

Go bold with pattern or colour. Accent chairs are a great place to show off your decorating style.

2. Dress It Up

Dress up a neutral chair. Add a colourful throw or a pillow to any chair to add some personality.

3. Experiment with Shape

There are tons of great accent chair options to choose from. The colour of it is important, but so is the shape. Choose a shape that you'll enjoy looking at it for years to come.

4. Fill a Corner

Unsure of what to put in that awkward corner of the living room? Try an accent chair, or two!

5. Conversation Zones

Create a conversation zone. When visiting with friends, chairs should be close enough so you can talk easily. Fill in empty spots to allow for easy conversation.

6. Texture

Look for an accent chair with lots of texture, especially if it's neutral in colour. For example, try a tufted chair. Tufting is achieved by attaching buttons through an upholstered piece and pulling the thread tight. This results in tufts or indentations in the back seat of the chair.

7. Notice Piping

Piping adds a finishing touch to any chair. It's usually applied to the seams of the chair, usually around the edges of the seats, arms and backs.

8. Leg Style

Leg style is important as many accent chairs have exposed legs. Choose a style that reflects your personality. If you like modern or contemporary, choose a sleek or plain leg. For a traditional style, try a carved or turned leg.

9. Add a Table

Add a table or ottoman. It's nice to have a place for a water glass or reading glasses, but putting a small table near an accent chair also creates a lovely arrangement. Adding an ottoman in front of a chair or in between two chairs is a great place to perch your feet.

10. Do They Have to Match?

Well, it’s a matter of taste. If you love symmetry, matching chairs beside each other are ideal. If they are on opposite sides of the room, they don’t have to match.
